Long Island University

Long Island University (LIU) is a private university with campuses in Brooklyn and Brookville (LIU Post), New York. It enrolls over 16,000 students across more than 500 academic programs including business, health sciences, arts, and engineering. LIU combines an urban experience at its Brooklyn campus with suburban charm and green space at Post. LIU emphasizes accessible education, Division I athletics (the Sharks), and strong career preparation, notably in journalism (home of the George Polk Awards) and health professions.

Founded in 1926 in Brooklyn to provide affordable higher education, LIU expanded in 1951 by acquiring the Marjorie Post estate in Brookville—now LIU Post. It unified its athletic programs in 2019 into one Division I Sharks program and has grown its offerings with online and global programs such as LIU Global

In 2024, U.S. News & World Report ranked LIU #359 among national universities. It has gained recognition for its journalism awards, pharmacy and health programs, and a place in regional higher education rankings.
